Well we have been going at it this week with yet another game uploaded to www.chatebot.com . This one is the same basic game as Beach babe blackjack, but with a difference. The name of it is Strip Jackie Black, your dolly bird dealer, so I can guess you already know the difference. Yes it's an adult strip tease game. Nothing too raunchy, just a strip down to bikini bottoms, but there's no wayhttp://www.handango.com/, and http://www.clickgamer.com/ will have it on their sites being classed as adult content.

I've created two new games which are on sale at www.clickgamer.com and www.handango.com,
as well as www.chatebot.com.

The first is 3 little words.
A great teaser game. This word grid challenge is very addictive. You will only get a clue as to what the three words are within the grid. This makes finding the words much harder.
However, if you are stuck, the answer is but a click away. Then, I am sure, the words will spring out from the grid for you to find.
The application allows you to input the three words to see if you are right or wrong. Alternatively, you can just find the words and mentally locate them, so long as you don't cheat!

The second new game is Beach Babe Blackjack

Why just play Blackjack, when you can play against a beautiful babe at the beach? She acts as your dealer and you can while away the hours in the sun as you gamble with the hotel's chips while you relax on the beach.

The idea of this game is that you want a hand value that is closer to 21 than that of the Beach Babe, without being over 21. You can place bets at the start of each hand.

Loads of new developments

At www.chatebot.com there have been loads of new developments since my last post. I have been very lax in posting over the last few months, and I intend to rectify this.

I now have over 20 games listed on the site, and sales have been steady over the summer. Penalty and Betahorse seem to be the best sales items.

One of the ideas I have had to increase sales is to create better sales pages for each item. Therefore I have done a real creative jobby on the last two games I have produced.
Shoot the Fokkers and Strip Jackie Black.

I intend to try google ads to sell shoot the Fokkers, and see if this helps sales. We will see.

Sales are much better via handango.com than through my own site. Dunno why. Could it be that Handango are a known entity and users are wary of unknown distributers???

I have a deal with a distributer in the far east and am hoping for good things there soon.

Flash Lite goes mass market with Actimagine

"I got word yesterday that Adobe purchased mobile technology from Actimagine, a French company specializing in vector graphics. At first, I took the announcement to be relatively small, but as I started digging into what Actimagine provides, I realized this could have a wider impact.
Flash Lite has always been an intriguing way for content developers, especially those who have already invested in Flash, to bring their creations to the mobile world. But so far, Flash Lite adoption has been hindered by phone requirements. It takes a beefy phone to run Flash Lite. With this agreement, Adobe now has technology that will allow Flash Lite to run on a much wider range of phones meaning that Flash developers will soon have an even bigger, and I would say more lucrative, market to deliver content.

This comes on the heels of the Laszlo announcement that they are teaming up with Sun to bring OpenLaszlo to the Java ME platform. Obviously the mobile world is experiencing a lot of growth, but I think this new focus on delivering applications and content to a broader range of devices is good. People with high end phones tend to be a bit more tech savvy, and are perhaps willing to put up with more to have the cutting edge. The phones they buy come with solutions to do what they need, and the idea of buying extra Flash Lite content, or running other types of applications just hasn't taken off.

Nokia 3250 starts shipping, Nokia N91 will ship in April

"The first Symbian OS 9.1 and first S60 3rd Edition phone have started shipping in the form of the Nokia 3250. The 3250 is Nokia's mid-teir music smartphone and costs 350 Euros. The Nokia N91 will start shipping in Europe in the first week of April, and follow in the Middle East and Asia in the second week of April. Shipping dates for the US market are not yet available. The Nokia N91 is Nokia's high end music phone and will cost 700 Euros

N91 and E70 FCC approved, N91 supports UPnP

"The Nokia N91, the music focused phone with a hard disk, and the E70, the enterprise focused phone with a gulwing form factor, have been approved by the FCC. The documents available include internal pictures (where the N91's hard disk is visible) and the user manuals.

The N91 user manual reveals the N91 will innclude UPnP support and includes details on the Music Shop application which will allow users to download music over the air to their phones and the PC Music Sync (which uses Windows Media Player 11). Read on for more.

Highlights revealed from the manual about the music functionality of the phone include:
Music Shop allowing purchase and download over the air from a client application.
PC Sync of music files via Windows Media Player 11 (via USB Cable), including Janus DRM protected WMA files.

However the Music Shop application is service agnostic, meaning it can be connected to any service which supports it. The music shop allows you to search for and download music to your N91 directly from the phone.
Other new functionality of note includes:

UPnP support which allows for the sharing of files (the extent of this functionality is not clear as it looks like a later addition to the manual [see indexes]). Universl Plug and Play will almost certainly facillitate the sharing of playlists and music talked about by Nokia at the phones launch. It should also allow you to play music from your N91 to your home WiFi provided it is
UPnP compatiable (or has a UPnP adaptor).

Our first game for the iRiver U10

We have just developed Winter as our first iRiver U10 game. It is online at www.mobile.chatebot.com and our sister site www.flashlite4mobile.com . It is priced at $7, or £4 as the mobile version.

As there is no text input capabilities in the U10, we have used the talk to screen version of the mobile application as the model.

We are hoping over the coming weeks to re-develop all of our applications for the iRiver U10 as we feel this device is needs good quality Flash Lite games, for they are virtually non existent barring the six that come pre-installed.

Calsoft Q3 net shoot up 216%

Has there been any change?

Thankfully, yes! While the J2ME platform has been slowly but safely following its well established path, adding a few new profiles, the release of Flash Lite 2 brings a lot joy and good news for mobile developers.

So, what is new in Flash Lite 2? Maybe the most important improvement in the new player is the support for ActionScript 2.0. So, we can forget about one the most important caveats of the old Flash Lite player, which was the flash 4 syntax (which also meant complex nested movieclips structures, code everywhere, and a deprecated syntax).

Now we do not have to jump between two different syntaxes, and we do not have to jump between two different development paradigms. We finally have an object-oriented language, with all its advantages: code reuse, small entities that are responsible of small tasks,... well, you know.

But the adoption of AS2 is not only an advantage by itself. Been able to develop a desktop application, a web application or a Flash Lite application writing exactly the same code will make much easier for all the developers out there to try the technology. And more developers working on "the shinny thing" means more applications available, and having more applications available will mean that there will be a stronger demand for more good applications. Flash Lite big in Korea

Korea has been instrumental in the release of Adobe System Inc.'s upgraded Flash engine, an executive from the global software company said.
"Korean consumers have been waiting (for the release) and also took part in the beta-testing. Korea can't help but be instrumental given its mature digital economy," said Daniel Brongiel, vice president for mobile and devices at Adobe, best known to the Korean public for the PDF program.
Brongiel is in Korea to promote Flash Lite 2.0 and Flash Player SDK 7, the latest additions to the well-known Flash technology. The engines are modified from Flash technology, best known for powering Web animation, and optimized for use in mobile and other consumer electronics.
Brongiel said the new Flash provides richer user interface with new features including ActionScript 2 support and Unicode support for international markets.
"The world is continuously bombarded by multimedia messages. Adobe's mission is to make digital images and experiences more engaging. The new Flash engines apply to any electronic device with a display screen," the executive said.
Brongiel said Adobe is confident of the prospects of Flash Lite.
Leading handset makers, including Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. and Pantech, have begun to embed Flash Lite into their mobile phones, though they won't likely to reach end-users until later this year.
Brongiel said the pace in which developers have adopted Flash is just amazing, and attests to vendors' confidence in the software to bring in more money.

Flash Lite 2 release... at last!

Well it's here, at last developers can get away from the old vesion 4 actionscript. BUT, it will be for some time before the general public will be able to download these apps for their phones, as 1.1 hasn't actually made it in any numbers yet.

I intend therefore, to carry on producing 1.1 apps for the next six months, at least, regardless of the difficulties of Flash lite.

"Yesterday, Adobe announced the release of Flash Lite 2, the next version of Flash for mobile devices, along with Flash Player SDK 7 for consumer electronics. Both of these new versions will enable mobile devices to display Flash animation in the same way a PC does. Adobe claims they’re also designed to provide a framework for the device’s own user interface.

According to a news release on Adobe’s website, both Flash Lite 2 and Flash Player SDK-7 support ActionScript 2, Unicode and XML data handling. Adobe has also released a preview of an update to Flash Professional 8, which is needed to author content specifically for the new platforms. The company says that developing a mobile application using Flash can be three to five times faster than using alternative technologies."

"According to Gartner, sales of mobile phones will reach a billion a year by 2009, where one in three of all phones will be sold in Asian countries. Estimates from research house Informa Telecoms and Media also state that the global market for mobile entertainment could reach US$42.8 billion by 2010.

Nick Ingelbrecht, Gartner's principal analyst, estimates that by 2009, the revenues for the mobile entertainment market in the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Japan) could reach almost US$8 billion, making up between 30 and 35 percent of the worldwide figures. This would reflect an increase from the estimated US$3.4 billion revenues to be generated by the end of 2005, he said.

The first, Kitty responds to yes and no questions from the user when they input text or speak aloud their questions to the handset.

Autumn as I have mentioned earlier is a chatebot with A.I. capabilities and is a virtual girlfriend. I am hoping this will be a killer app. but only time will tell.

"Macromedia is to acquire Mobile Innovation, a privately-held design and integration house in the UK with around 50 staff, for an undisclosed sum.
What makes this deal noteworthy is that Mobile Innovation designs phones as well as user interfaces. It's an integrator, and Tier One handset manufacturers devolve a lot of design decisions to MI. It's similar to Apple's relationship with Tony Fadell's design shop - which created the iPod - only on a larger scale. MI declines to mention which companies it works with because of confidentiality agreements with phone OEMs, and an opaque web site gives little clues as to what it really does.

But it's well known amongst industry insiders that Mobile Innovation was responsible for the Nokia 9300 Communicator design and other high-end Symbian smartphones, Nokia's Series 90 user interface, and Hildon, the GUI for Nokia's Linux tablet. Both of the founders, CEO Jonathan Sulenski and CTO Matt Millar came from Symbian with Millar's roots reaching back to Psion and the Series 5 PDA.
So what on earth is Adobe, which last week received DoJ clearance to acquire Macromedia, going to do with a smartphone design shop?
The answer is Flash, Millar told us today. Macromedia thinks Flash is going to be very, very big on non-PC devices and Millar agrees. It's a plausible pitch, too, and it goes something like this.
Here we are in 2005 and that mythical beastie called "Mobile Data" has yet to become an accepted part of our daily lives. Beyond the billion dollar niches of text messaging and ringtones, most of us generally don't use data on the go. And even though the WAP fiasco is a distant memory, phones are now incredibly capable computers, and 3G networks and Wi-Fi hotspots are commonplace, data usage is minimal.

How so? Partly it's because mobile has to compete with the real world, and the real world usually beats it every time. Newspapers are more convenient to read, while directions and advice are easier to find by asking a local human. But it's also, as Millar says, because publishers don't have the tools to make delivering that content very easy.
Flash makes it a no brainer, he argues. A good app requires only a few lines of code, which means that publishers don't have to deploy armies of Web 2.0 consultants, and the content goes everywhere.

"Flash runs on RTOS phones, on Microsoft phones, on Symbian and on BREW. Flash Lite 1.1 is in the Samsung D-600 and all of Sony Ericsson's latest phones," he says..." More>>

Iccle Ted

I've just loaded up to www.Handango.com , and www.flashlite4mobile.com my new app called "Iccle Ted". I always loved Andy Pandy when I was a child and my favourite character was Little Ted. Iccle Ted is not the same character, but I did think about him when I was creating him.

How he was built.
I went to the local car boot sale and bought up a teddy for 10p. I knew what I had in mind you see. When I got home I stuck him in a glass mug, with his head sticking out. Then I set my digital camera up on the table and Phil, my son swiveled him round so as I could take pictures of his head in 180 degree turn. After this I took a pic of his body.
Later, I took the pics into photoshop and vectorised them so only a few colours remained, then I brought these tifs into Freehand and traced them.
I eventually had a head that turned through the 180 degrees and all the body parts. It was then a case of animating all of these in Flash.
Because the arms and legs were drawn as one object for each he seemes very jerky in his movement. It was then I had the brainwave of drawing strings so as he looked like a puppet, ala Little Ted, Andy Pandy's side kick.

Financial terms of the deal were not made public.
Though it's a lucrative proposition for developers, hardware makers, network operators and content providers, tailoring applications and other forms of software for mobile gadgets is a tough task.
The smaller footprint and workspace makes it challenging to create applications or enable media like games, music videos or films, on a smartphone.
Thanks to Mobile Innovation's acumen in UI design and implementation, Macromedia will improve its ability to provide customers and partners with a platform for launching mobile applications and other forms of rich media based on its flagship Flash technology.
Macromedia will use Mobile Innovation assets to create a mobile consulting practice serving Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
Mobile Innovation will integrate into the Macromedia consulting team, led by Peter Lelliott. Mobile Innovation co-founder and CTO Matt Millar will lead the mobile and devices practice for Macromedia in EMEA.

Competition For Mobile Phone GUI Heats Up

A version of Macromedia Flash Lite is due next year that extends Macromedia's relationship with Qualcomm, signed earlier this year, to develop a set of applications for Qualcomm's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (BREW). Ive officially launched http://www.flashlite4mobile.com using Handango's cart engine and delivery service. This is great for the small developer, as it allows wireless download and internet download for a 20% cut. It reduces when I sell thousands, but I won't be at that point just yet (lol).

The more I am involved with this company, the more I am impressed with their strategy. Within 8 working hours, all of my applications have been checked, and bar one, have been submitted for general release, within their site. The exception was Winter, my last app. which I stupidly listed as a 'sexy' girlfriend. Their software spider picked up on the 'sexy' word, and classified it as adult material.

I contacted them saying, "that there is no adult content ie swearing or sexual inuendo, and they suggested "I submit again with out the 'sexy' word.

On another note, I've had a compliaint from a customer!
He bought Annie Mi, for the Nokia 7710, which I stupidly listed as Flash Lite compatible. Whereas it is Flash 6 enabled. That customer will obviously gt a full refund and I will endevour to create a Flash 6 version for their phone Free of charge. I'll try to do thi s tomorrow. I mention this, so as other developers will be more careful in listing compatible devices on their own sites

Problems with pan and zoom

In a recent entry, I spoke of my intention to create a virtual girlfriend called bikki. I wanted to do soft pans and zooms. Last night I started the initial animation. Gladly, after an hour or two of doing this, I had the sense to try it on the phone. Let me tell you, it runs like Red Rum, and that nags dead! No, it's back to the idea of small amounts of animation and a lot of still image placement. What I intend now, is to just jump from illustration pose to pose and close up to far shot, with no zooms at all. Shame, but the devices are not PCs and I will have to work within the constraints of the hardware.

My wife Julie made an interesting statement last week. She said I ought to do a sexy ai character for older teenagers. So I came up with the idea of Biki, a girlfriend on holiday. The idea behind it is that, you as the user of the app., open a video-texting session with Biki, who will chat like my other chatebots, but unlike them will be a sexy girlfriend on holiday. I want to try to achieve a realistic sinario of a real video conference, with clever animation and video panning techniques.

I think a little titivation is fine but don't want to get explicit with the content, so will make her sexy without knowing it, if you know what I mean. She may respond to some sort of mild sexual intuendo, but will become angry, and may even switch off the connection with the user if the conversation becomes to lewd or rude. She will be a nice girl, the girl next door type, as opposed to some tarty street vamp. With all this in mind, I've started drawing freehand images (above) that I will animate in Flash later this week.

I have a couple of questions I have asked Bill Perry at Macromedia. He hasn't answered yet, but when he does I will post his comments here Firstly, as you know, I've been selling Five of my Flash Lite Apps. on Handango.com, having created a .sis file with swf2sis. Sis files are used like win zip is on pc, to compress all bits of an application (the app. itself and any text files additional swfs, jpgs etc) and is uncompressed on the phone, once downloaded via usb, wireless or bluetooth. Blueskynorth the makers of this software utility send full instructions on how to use this after installing. Note; Perl needs to be installed as does the sdks for symbian devices. Then symbian numbers need to be obtained giving each of your apps.' a unique number specific to you as a developer.

I obtained my numbers from symbian , they came free but they are unverified ie not symbian signed. Getting Symbian signing means the application meets the criteria set out as industry standard, and companies such as Nokia and Sony Erricson only allow Symbian signed apps. to be sold via there portals. With this in mind it seems an important thing to get done. However, Java games are not tested using this model.

Sun Microsystems do a testing facility called Java signed, that is also excepted. My First question to Bill Perry was; Will Macromedia, like Sun do a seperate signing so Nokia and rest will except the flash Lite apps. Or do we developers create our flash lite code and send it off to symbian to have it tested by none Flash testers? That option seems mad to me. I'll let you know if they ever reply to this question.

I am really impressed with Handango, they have not only a very easy to use site for developers. Where they make live, developers applications, within eight hours. But they also have agreements with phone makers such as Forum Nokia and Sonny Ericsson. I know as while browsing these sites, I found them listed as one of the independent software channels .

Obviously this means my chatebot applications are being viewed by a much bigger audience than I had first thought.

There seems to be some confusion over the flash lite player for mobiles. Let me try to explain what Macromedia are doing. AS you will be aware, Flash is available in most browsers, they say 96% of users have flash player embedded in their web browser software.

However, Macromedia are using a different model for mobile devices. They are selling a licence to phone companies, and Nokia, Samsung and others have agree to a licence of this player.

What this means is you will soon be able to buy a series 60 device with the flash player pre-installed. But in the mean time, it is possible to get this player before these phones are available. Macromedia are selling for just $10 the plugin for phones. That means you can get flash content on your phone today!

I've been busy...
Today I am working on my fifth chatebot application. The fourth with a.i. capabilities

SO, to date I have created Retch, Annie Mi, Bet-A-Horse, Marilyn and now I'm finishing off Winter, a fashion model virtual girlfriend. I will need to get on and change chatebot.com and the new Flashlite4mobile.com to allow people to buy them direct from me, but there's so much to do and of course I still have my day time job.

Sales of the chatebots have been OK but not good. I think its 11 sold so far at Handango.com where they have been priced at $7.00. I can't wait for the Flash Player to be pre-installed on mobiles, as I am hoping that will be the real start of my sales. We'll see...

Well that was quick.

It seems the Flash five code I used was not that far removed from version four, which Flash Lite 1.1 for mobiles uses, so I managed the build in about three days...

Retch price increase to $9.99

Ive made a price increase on www.handango.com which has made the Retch software be removed for eight hours while they re check it unfortunately.

I increased it because other games of lesser quality are priced higher and I thought .... why not!

Adding a face to A.I.

I have, over the years, been intrigued with the thought that humans can have sensible coherent conversations with artificial intelligent beings. There are many sites that allow anyone who is interested in AI to build an AI chatterbot. My first build was using AIML (artificial intelligent mark-up language) at http://www.pandorabots.com/
However, the interface was, and still is, just an input box where you add your question and then on submission a text response from the robot is shown.
I wanted to create a character that you see and can get to know, so I built a Flash front-end to the Pandorabot that I had created. Although this chatebot works well, I wasn't entirely happy, as the responses are similar to other people's bots created using AIML software. She is still in beta as of writing this, but she responds quite well to a users' questions, be they general or specific to the actual actress.

Currently I am working on a version of the chatebot software, that I have patented, within the mobile phone environment. I believe teenagers, with their desire to text each other, would be a great audience and market for my AI chatebots via the mobile phone medium. I hope to sell them at a similar price to the current screen savers and themes that can be downloaded to an individual's phone.

Macromedia have recently agreed terms with Nokia and Samsung relating to licensing their player specifically developed for mobile phones. I am one of the Flash developers currently working on programmes for this future player, which will be implemented in the next generation of mobile phones. I have a strong belief that AI can be used for fun in this way, and that I, as a designer and programmer, can make money by selling characters to the general public. I intend to develop virtual boy/girl friends, virtual talking pets, monsters etc, all with their own personalities that can be purchased for the price of a youngsters weekly pocket money.
